CAVE SHAPE
This post is meant for cave males, but has applications for all.
Our bodies were not originally made for modern day transportation or the industrialized world that we live in. Yes, not so long ago, men and women alike were trudging through jungles, paddling riverboats with sticks or running 40 miles through the desert in Kenya.
We ask you – what effect has this had on our not-so-cave-like-anymore bodies? You tell me, because we can only guess. Regardless, every human being should be in decent shape, if they are capable and have the time (which constitutes the vast majority of us). That said, if you want to be in great shape, that is an entirely different level. Unless you’ve been a serious college or pro athlete, endurance race competitor, or elite military, its likely you’ve never been there.
We won’t espouse on how to get in this kind of shape, but we are going to give you the most credible, time-tested, and sensible way to get started. It’s the ramp-up workout the Navy Dept. of Special Warfare gives to Navy SEAL candidates before they enter the qualification program (better known as BUDS). We screened other special ops branches who have similar workouts, but this the most complete, balanced, sanctioned, and and information packed program that we were able to find. It works, and is realistic for most people to complete, given consistent motivation and a high threshold for pain. Here’s a snapshot:
- 6 months from start to finish (3 months if you are already in good muscular and endurance shape and have a water background)
- Heavily emphasis on running, swimming, core strength, body weight reps, and weights
- Gives phenomenal guidance on nutrition, stretching, and injury prevention and treatment
- 2 a day workouts 5-6 days a week
If you are in search of a new program or looking foe a new challenge, I suggest this one. It’s wrtitten by the best and there are no shortvutes – you will either finish or you won’t. If you’re going to get in shape, you might as well attempt to do it at a high level.

Also, if you are interested in a military career and are old enough to go this hard, this will put you heads above your peers, depending on what field you are interested in (check with your coach or physical trainer if you are younger than 18).
